As Turkey considers to struggle with the idea of its place in the EU, Iceland appears to be on track for joining the European Commission as the organization has agreed to talks that will help open negotiations that will allow Reykjavik to move towards getting Iceland into the commission. Of course, before Iceland gets the official green light the separate European governments will need to decide if they will support the invitation of the EU to Iceland. At the moment, many feel that the country will serve as a gateway into the arctic for Europe making it a great asset to the union.
Making the acquisition especially important is the fact that the EU would then have its foot in the door for any future competition over the economic and mineral deposits that are located in the northern portion of the globe. However, standing in the way of Iceland’s quick acceptance into the EU is the fact that it is in a dispute with the Netherlands and Britain over billions of savings that were lost when the country saw its large banks collapse back in 2008 as part of the recession. Britain has stated however that if they are able to meet the deposit guarantee scheme obligations then they would be happy to support their application.
